We have three major credit reporting bureaus: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. It is very possible for these bureaus to have three very different credit scores for the same person. This can make credit-scoring process very complicated for lenders and borrowers. Due to these reasons, the bureaus created one common entity for all three of them called VantageScore.
The nation’s three consumer credit reporting companies - Equifax, Experian and TransUnion - worked together to develop a tri-bureau generic credit scoring system. Such systems exist in the market today, including several that are produced by the individual companies themselves. However, VantageScore marks the first time that the three companies joined forces to produce a model that scores consumers consistently across all three companies.
Due to the fact that this single credit score is developed simultaneously from consumer data across all three credit reporting companies, it promises greater consistency and predictability.
